Iona Abbey

August 9-15, 2008

The Abbey is now owned by Historic Scotland and the Iona Community who rebuilt most of it are tenants

The large St John's cross is a modern concrete replica - parts of the original are in the museum at the rear of the abbey

One of the original stone crosses in front of the Abbey. Right and bellow: John Smith's grave in St Oran's Churchyard (Relig Odhráin) next to the Abbey

The epitaph on the boulder marking his grave reads "An Honest Man's The Noblest Work of God".

St Oran's Chapel, the oldest building on Iona (c 1150) in the ancient graveyard of 48 Kings of Scotland

The dim interior of St Oran's Chapel, still used for weddings and funerals

The Abbey from St Oran's Churchyard. John Smith's grave is just around the corner in the walled area

Iona Abbey from the Abbot's Tor in the grounds. The scaffold is for replacing the cement mortar by lime mortar

The remains of the former House of the Bishop next to the Abbey

It is now a picturesque ruin
